Greg Henika

Greg HenikaGreg Henika, beloved Blue Spruce Kiwanis member, passed away on January 22, 2015.  Greg was preparing the course for the planned Blue Spruce Kiwanis Ice Golf Tournament to be held on Evergreen Lake on January 25th.  He was trying to make the event safe by moving one of the ice golf fairways.  Unfortunately, the small tractor he was driving went through the ice into the lake.  Greg did not survive.  Greg founded the ice golf tournament in 2011 as a way to raise money for the Blue Spruce Aktion Club.  The Aktion Club is a group of adults with disabilities that live in the mountain communities.  Greg taught special education at Evergreen High School for many years.  He had a special place in his heart for everyone with disabilities.

Greg set an example for us all by volunteering for numerous community events.  In addition to being the go-to person for ice golf, Greg was in charge of the children’s area at the Big Chili Cook-Off and the Project Eliminate campaign at Blue Spruce Kiwanis.  Project Eliminate is Kiwanis’ worldwide program to eliminate deaths from maternal and neonatal tetanus.  Local events that he volunteered for include the Triple Bypass aid stations, Halloween walk, Holiday walk, Drive-Smart Lake Plunge on New Years Day, Evergreen Rodeo pancake breakfast, Wilmot pancake breakfast and many others.  At all of these events, Greg usually wore his big blue cowboy hat and a big smile.  For many of these events, he was the first one to arrive and the last one to leave.  Greg also served as President of Blue Spruce Kiwanis and Lieutenant Governor of the local Kiwanis division.

Greg is survived by his wife, Ellen and daughter, Joy plus numerous other relatives and friends.  Greg’s family would like you to consider making donations to his favorite causes, the Aktion Club and Project Eliminate.  If you would like to donate, make the checks out to:  The Blue Spruce Kiwanis Foundation.  Checks should have “Aktion Club”, “Eliminate Project” or “Greg” written in the memo field.  Please mail checks to Blue Spruce Kiwanis, PO Box 1153, Evergreen CO 80437.  Also, Greg would want you to consider volunteering your time for one or more of our great community events.
